Easy Encryption
Encryption is performed automatically by ToughTech Secure's real-time encryption engine. Your computer will see the volume available as a normal full-speed drive. If your drive is lost or stolen, however, you can rest assured that without the proper AES Encryption Key, no one will be able to view its contents.
How to use ToughTech Secure with a Key
Using ToughTech Secure is very easy.
- Connect the external drive to your computer via FireWire, USB, or eSATA.
- Insert your AES Encryption Key into ToughTech Secure.
- Wait for the green LED to light up on the front of ToughTech Secure - this confirms the key is accepted.
- You can now remove the AES Encryption Key. It's not needed again until the power is cycled.
The ability to remove the key after power up helps you keep your physical key safe.
The key is smaller than a standard thumb drive and easily fits on a key chain or lanyard.

AES Encryption Keys
Your ToughTech Secure will come with 3 identical keys. These three keys exist so you can
- Keep one with you (for your own use)
- Keep a backup on site in a safe location
- Keep a backup off site in a safe location
These keys will be completely unique to you. There are 2128 possible ways to encode a key. If one of your keys is compromised, via theft or loss, you should consider replacing your keyset.

AES Encryption Key Programmer
If you wish to create your own keys, you will need the AES Encryption Key Programmer. While we do not retain copies or records of customers' keys, some customers' security protocols may demand that they have tighter control over the key itself. There are also situations where more than 3 keys are needed - for granting access to more than one person, for example. Lastly, we're aware of situations where encryption keys must change on a timed schedule. These customers will be interested in the AES Encryption Key Programmer, which will create or copy their AES Encryption Keys.
Small Size
Not much bigger than a pack of playing cards, ToughTech Secure mini-Q will easily travel with you, fitting easily into pockets and briefcases.
Accepts SATA drives
SATA drives are standard today. They're fast, and they work natively with the fast Oxford 934 chipset found in ToughTech Secure mini-Q. This chipset ensures you the fastest FireWire, USB, and eSATA speeds available.
Connects to almost any Computer
With quadruple connectivity, you'll be able to hook it to practically any computer out there. ToughTech Secure mini-Q provides dual FireWire 800
ports (backwards compatible to FireWire 400) and a combo eSATA/USB2 port. As a result, you can connect it to any computer running any recent operating system.
To make sure you can connect in any situation, all appropriate cables and adapters are included. See the 'includes' section above.
ToughTech Secure mini-Q is bootable in FireWire/USB/eSATA mode on any computer that supports this feature. You can even boot from an encrypted volume.
Plug and play
ToughTech Secure mini-Q works out of the box with no new drivers needed with any modern operating system including Mac OS X and Windows XP, Vista, 7 as well as any distribution of Linux that supports FireWire, USB, or eSATA. If using FireWire, additional FireWire devices can be daisy-chained through ToughTech Secure mini-Q.
AC Adapter or USB/FireWire powered
Most FireWire ports have adequate power to operate ToughTech Secure mini-Q, so most users prefer to use ToughTech Secure mini-Q without an AC adapter for maximum portability. If your port does not supply enough power, you have more than one power option:
- AC Adapter
- FireWire bus power
- Dual USB host connection (one for USB, one for extra power)
You will need extra power if the port you use does not provide enough power for ToughTech Secure mini-Q. This includes all 4 pin FireWire hosts (such as Sony iLink which provides no power at all), eSATA ports (which provide no power) and many USB ports.
Some 2.5 inch drives are taller than others. If you plan to install your own drive, make sure your drive is 9.5mm tall, which are compatible. Less common 12.5mm thick drives are not compatible with this device.
